Mounted Theuroporoi by EthicallyChallenged Mounted Theuroporoi by EthicallyChallenged
My first and hopefully not last contribution to another historical magazine. This time we move further back in time, to antiquity.

Horrible color choices were forced on me, don't hit me.

Have a look, you might like them. I could only read the first two, as I can't read Spanish or Italian, unfortunately :( MW and AW are in English.

Salve, horses are as horses are, this one and his friends are not like horses we see - horse anatomy is not an easy one, but you will get there :) They gave you wrong reference for the the horse bit and the bridle, as these are Galatians I suppose. Also, on the website comitatus.org you can see many photos of reenactors leading horses using reins while holding their shields like this fellow - anyway, solid work as illustration

To wylizanie o którym mówisz mnie tez mocno boli :/ I kolory.

What were they thinking, isn't that historically incorrect?

I mean, red dye is carmine, it was only brought to Europe in what, 16th century? And probably only available to the very rich. And the same story with Tyrian purple, red is like THE hardest to obtain dye in known history. And they are just parading in it like that, heck, even the horses wear red, why not...

Hmmm... not really my area of expertise, I'm just a hired pen, but according to the article, the colors are based on traces of pigment left on the terracota depicting the warrior. That of course doesn't rule out the possibility of the terracota being painted much later, but I'm not as competent as a historian, so I paint what they tell me to paint even if it's against my aesthetic taste.

Oh, I don't blame you man, it just seems weird to me.

I'm not much of a history buff myself, but I know that red was rare, very very rare. This is why kings and cardinals and popes wear purple and red, by the way. They are showing off how rich they are by wearing the most expensive colors of all.

True that! I often wondered what it would be like to live in the times before saturated colors bombarded people from all directions. How much more beautiful rainbows, sunsets and flowers were, in the world dominated by grays. And how much more impressive a king or bishop would seem...
